ICE Helicopters – UK PPL(H) Course Exercises, Aims & Minimum Times
Ex.1a – Familiarisation with the Helicopter Ground only
To learn the characteristics of the helicopter type used on the course.
Ex.1b – Emergency Procedures Ground only
To learn essential emergency procedures.
Ex.2 – Preparation for and Action after Flight Ground only
To learn the actions required before flight and how to secure the aircraft after flight.
Ex.3 – Air Experience (0.5 hr)
To gain air experience and familiarisation with the airborne environment.
Ex.4 – Effects of Controls (1.0 hr)
To learn the effects of the cockpit controls and the functions of the instruments.
Ex.5 – Power & Attitude Changes (1.0 hr)
To learn the effect of power and attitude changes on the helicopter in flight.
Ex.6 – Straight & Level Flight (Dual: 0.5 hr | Solo: 0.4 hr)
To learn to fly the helicopter in a constant direction, at a constant level and in balance.
Ex.7 – Climbing (Dual: 0.5 hr | Solo: 0.2 hr)
To learn to enter and maintain a climb in a constant direction and to level off at selected
altitudes/heights.
Ex.8 – Descending (Dual: 0.5 hr | Solo: 0.2 hr)
To learn to enter and maintain a descent in a constant direction and to level off at selected
altitudes/heights.
Ex.9 – Turning (Dual: 0.5 hr | Solo: 0.2 hr)
To learn to complete a level turn at 20° AOB onto selected headings.
Ex.10 – Basic Autorotation (1.0 hr)
To learn to enter autorotation, control the helicopter at a given airspeed and RRPM and
recover to the climb.
Ex 11a – Hovering (2.0 hr)
To learn to hold a given height and position relative to the ground.
Ex.11b –Hover Taxi, Clearing Turns (1.0 hr)
To learn to control the helicopter at a low groundspeed in the hover taxi and to carry out a
90° clearing turn.
Ex.11c – Hovering, Taxiing, Emergencies (1.0 hr)
To learn to control the helicopter at a low groundspeed in the hover and hover taxi, and learn how to deal with emergencies in the hover.
Ex.12 – Take-off & Landing (1.0 hr)
To learn to take-off and land facing into wind, crosswind and downwind.
Ex.13 – Transitions (1.0 hr)
To learn to transition from the hover to the climb and from approach to the hover.
Ex.14a – Circuit, Approach, Landing (Dual 1.0 hr | Solo 1.8 hrs)
To learn to fly the normal airfield circuit pattern and position the helicopter for an approach
to the hover.
Ex.14b – Steep & Limited Power Circuits (1.0 hr)
To learn to fly the normal circuit pattern and carry out steep approaches and approaches
and landings with limited power.
Ex.14c – Circuit Emergencies (0.5 hr)
To learn to fly the normal circuit pattern and position the helicopter for an approach to the
hover when dealing with emergencies.
Ex.15 – First Solo (Solo: 0.2 hr)
To learn to fly the normal circuit pattern and position the helicopter for an approach to the
hover (solo).
Ex.16 – Sideways & Backwards (Dual 0.5 hr | Solo 0.5 hrs)
To learn to manoeuvre the helicopter in sideways and backwards flight maintaining a constant
hover height.
Ex.17 – Spot Turns (Dual 0.5 hr | Solo 0.5 hrs)
To learn to turn the helicopter through 360° maintaining a constant position and height.
Ex.18 – HOGE, Vortex Ring (0.5 hr)
To learn:
– to hover outside ground effect maintaining constant height & heading.
– to recognise the onset of vortex ring and to take correct recovery action.
– to recognise the loss of tail rotor effectiveness and to take the correct recovery action
Ex.19 – Simulated Engine-off Landings (1.0 hr)
To learn the various EOL techniques so that the most appropriate can be selected in the event
of an engine failure.
Ex.20 –Advanced Autorotations (2.5 hrs)
To learn how changes of airspeed, RRPM and manoeuvres affect the distance covered in
autorotation.
Ex.21 – Practice Forced Landings (1.5 hrs)
To learn to make an autorotative approach to a selected landing area.
Ex.22 – Steep Turns (0.5 hr)
To learn to turn the helicopter at high rates, at constant IAS, in level and in autorotative flight.
Ex.23 – Precision Transitions (Dual 0.5 hr | Solo 1.0 hrs)
To learn to control the helicopter in a transition from the hover to forward flight and back to the
hover maintaining constant height.
Ex.24 – Quickstops (1.0 hr)
To learn to bring the helicopter rapidly to the hover into wind from cruising speed and to carry
out an emergency turn from downwind.
Ex.25a – Navigation (Dual 5.0 hrs | Solo 5.0 hrs)
To learn basic visual navigation techniques.
Ex.25b – Low Level/Reduced Visibility Navigation (1.0 hr)
To consolidate basic visual navigation techniques. To understand navigational problems at
low level and in reduced visibility.
Ex.25c – Radio Navigation (1.0 hr)
To consolidate basic visual navigation techniques. To learn how to use radio aids to
navigation.
Ex.26 – Advanced Take-offs, Landings & Transitions (1.0 hr)
To learn to take-off, transition to & from the hover and land when heading out of wind or in
circumstances when normal transitions are not possible.
Ex.27 – Sloping Ground (0.5 hr)
To learn the techniques for assessment of and landing on or taking off from sloping ground.
Ex.28 – Limited Power (1.0 hr)
To learn to take-off, approach and land when the power is limited.
Ex.29 – Confined Area (1.0 hr)
To learn to enter, manoeuvre in and leave a confined area safely.
Ex.30 – Basic Instrument Flying (2.0 hrs)
To learn to fly the helicopter by sole reference to instruments.
