The Flight School
ICE Helicopters Flight School offers a wide range of courses from trial lessons to advanced type ratings; we are aiming to be one of the UK’s leading independent aviation companies.
Whatever stage of flying you are at, whether you have 1 hour or 100 hours, you will receive our professional and undivided attention for any training undertaken with us. Our instructors are always happy to chat about anything to do with helicopter training courses, offering our friendly help and advice anywhere we can.
Where to Begin
Becoming a helicopter pilot is one of the most exciting hobbies and can be an extremely rewarding career. To get a taste of what flying a helicopter is like, we offer a selection of fun and exciting trial lessons, perfect for budding helicopter enthusiasts, memorable gifts or special occasions.
The choice of helicopter is yours; we have a 2-seater R22, as well as a 2 or 4-seater Robinson R44. We use some of the world’s most popular training helicopters which we’re fond of for their high reliability, superior safety and great performance. The R22 has been the most popular training helicopter for decades as it’s very reliable and cost effective. The R44 has been incredibly popular worldwide since the 90s and is slightly more spacious & faster than the R22.
We can currently provide Private Pilot Licence (PPL(H)) training using the Robinson R22 and Robinson R44, but for qualified pilots we also provide additional type rating training to expand the types that you can fly – such as learning to fly the turbine Robinson R66 or MD520N.
What to Expect
After you have met your pilot and had a chance to chat, you’ll be escorted to the Elstree helipad where you will depart from. Your experienced instructor will handle the take-off and the radio as dual controls are fitted to the helicopter, but after you’ve left the helipad and are established in stable flight, you will be passed control of the aircraft under careful supervision.
You’ll be in the helicopter for either 30 or 60 minutes depending on which package you purchase. In addition to this, you will also have a pre-flight briefing with your instructor which should take approximately 30 minutes – this is not included in the total duration.
We operate our trial lessons seven days a week throughout the year, however availability may be limited during busy seasons. Gift vouchers can be purchased over the telephone or in person at our base at Elstree Aerodrome, by credit/debit card.
The flight can be booked at the time of purchase or the voucher holder can telephone to book a time convenient to themselves.
